MMP13 (collagenase 3)는 세포외기질 단백질(피브릴 콜라겐, 피브로넥틴, TNC, ACAN 등)의 분해에 관여합니다. Type I, II, III 콜라겐을 절단하며, 특히 용해형 Type II 콜라겐에 대한 활성이 가장 높습니다. 또한 Type IV, XIV, X 콜라겐을 분해할 수 있습니다.
MMP13은 상처 치유, 조직 재형성, 연골 분해, 골 발달 및 석회화 과정에 중요한 역할을 하며, 정상적인 배아 골 발달과 골화에 필요합니다.
유전자 변이는 spondyloepimetaphyseal dysplasia Missouri type, metaphyseal anadysplasia 1, metaphyseal dysplasia Sphar type 등의 질환과 연관될 수 있습니다.
