Target Information
CD21 (complement receptor 2, CR2, C3D receptor, EBV receptor) binds C3 complement fragments, particularly breakdown products that remain covalently attached to complement-activating surfaces or antigens.
CD21 plays important roles in:
- Uptake and retention of immune complexes
- Survival of memory B cells
- Development and maintenance of the humoral immune response
It also serves as a key receptor for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) binding and is involved in targeting prions to follicular dendritic cells, facilitating neuroinvasion after peripheral exposure.
A soluble form (sCD21) is shed from lymphocytes and retains ligand-binding ability.
CD21 interacts with CD23 and associates with CD19, CD81, and Leu13, forming a signal-transduction complex involved in B cell activation.
Genetic variations in CD21 are linked to susceptibility to systemic lupus erythematosus type 9 (SLEB9).
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms of CD21 have been identified.
