Target Information
SLC46A1 acts as an intestinal proton-coupled high-affinity folate transporter and an intestinal heme transporter mediating heme uptake from the gut lumen into duodenal epithelial cells. Iron is released from heme and may be transported into the bloodstream. Dietary heme iron serves as an important nutritional source of iron. The protein shows a higher affinity for folate than for heme.
