Product Specific Information

PA1-10010 can be used to trace NSE and to identify neuronal cells in cell culture and sectioned material.

Target Information

Neuron Specific Enolase (NSE, ENO1, ENO2, ENO3) is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate in glycolysis and the reverse reaction in gluconeogenesis.
NSE is highly stable in biological fluids and diffuses into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) when neuronal membranes are injured. It is one of three mammalian enolases—alpha (ENO1), beta (ENO3), and gamma (ENO2)—with gamma-subunit expressed primarily in neurons and neuroendocrine cells.
Co-expression of NSE and chromogranin A is common in neuroendocrine neoplasms. NSE antibodies are useful for identifying neuronal cell bodies, developing neuronal lineage, and neuroendocrine cells.
Release of NSE from damaged neurons into CSF and blood serves as a biomarker of neuronal injury. Clinically, NSE is a sensitive marker of neuronal damage in disorders such as stroke, hypoxic brain damage, status epilepticus, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and herpetic encephalitis. Elevated plasma NSE levels are also associated with neuroblastoma and small cell lung cancer.
