Product Specific Information
In Western blot using rat spinal cord whole tissue homogenates, this antibody detects all isotypes of MBP, resulting in bands at approximately 21.5 kDa, 18.5 kDa, 17 kDa, and 14 kDa.
Stable at 4°C for at least one year.
Target Information
The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also expressed in bone marrow and the immune system. These arise from the long MBP gene (Golli-MBP), which includes additional upstream exons.
Alternative splicing produces two transcript families:
- Golli-MBP transcripts — contain unique Golli exons fused in-frame with MBP exons, encoding hybrid proteins.
- Classic MBP transcripts — contain only MBP exons, producing the well-characterized myelin basic proteins.
This conserved gene structure suggests MBP transcription is integral to Golli regulation and function.
