Target Information

Ep-CAM (epithelial adhesion molecule, also known as epithelial specific antigen, ESA) is a transmembrane glycoprotein (~40 kDa) expressed in epithelial tissues.
It functions as a calcium-independent cell adhesion molecule and influences cell cycle, proliferation, and metabolism through induction of proto-oncogene c-myc and cyclins A and E.
Ep-CAM-mediated adhesions negatively regulate cadherin-mediated adhesions, impacting epithelial differentiation and growth.
Overexpression of Ep-CAM is associated with enhanced epithelial proliferation and is highly expressed in human carcinomas, serving as a marker for epithelial lineage tumors.
Ep-CAM is typically localized on the basolateral surface of simple epithelia and various carcinoma types, and is useful in distinguishing adenocarcinomas from pleural mesotheliomas.
