Target Information

This gene encodes a UDP-glucuronosyltransferase, an enzyme of the glucuronidation pathway that transforms small lipophilic molecules such as steroids, bilirubin, hormones, and drugs into water-soluble, excretable metabolites.
It is part of a complex locus including thirteen unique alternate first exons and four common exons. Four of the alternate exons are pseudogenes, while nine can be spliced to the common exons, producing proteins with distinct N-termini and identical C-termini.
Each first exon encodes the substrate binding site and has its own promoter. The preferred substrate is bilirubin, with moderate activity toward phenols, flavones, and C18 steroids.
Mutations in this gene cause Crigler-Najjar syndromes types I and II and Gilbert syndrome.
