Target Information
CD81 (TAPA-1, target of anti-proliferative antibody-1) is a member of the tetraspanin family, expressed on most nucleated cells, particularly germinal center B cells. It forms complexes with tetraspanins, integrins, coreceptors, and MHC molecules, influencing adhesion, morphology, activation, proliferation, and differentiation of B and T cells.
In muscle tissue, CD81 promotes cell fusion and myotube maintenance and acts as a receptor for hepatitis C virus. It associates with CD19, CD21, Leu 13, and integrins on the cell membrane. Antibodies to CD81 show anti-proliferative effects on lymphoid cell lines and may be linked to tumor-suppressor gene regions associated with malignancies.
