Target Information
Alpha Tubulin is part of a heterodimer consisting of alpha and beta tubulin subunits. Each subunit has a molecular weight of approximately 55 kDa. The alpha-beta tubulin heterodimer forms the basic building block of microtubules, which serve as structural supports and transport lines within eukaryotic cells, and play a key role in mitosis.
Microtubules, composed of alpha and beta tubulins, perform essential and diverse cytoskeletal functions. Gamma tubulin is critical for microtubule nucleation. Multiple alpha and beta tubulin genes are highly conserved among species. The alpha tubulin gene is similar to the mouse and rat Tuba1 gene, with expression predominantly in differentiated neurologic cells.
