Target Information
NeuroD1 is a transcriptional activator that functions as a differentiation factor during neurogenesis. It binds to the insulin gene E-box, requiring dimerization with another basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) protein for efficient DNA binding. Defects in NEUROD1 are associated with maturity onset diabetes of the young type VI (MODY6), an autosomal dominant non-insulin-dependent diabetes characterized by onset in young adulthood and impaired insulin secretion.
