Target Information
WNK1 serine/threonine kinase is a member of the WNK subfamily. WNK1 may regulate blood pressure by controlling sodium and chloride ion transport. Mutations in this gene have been linked to pseudohypoaldosteronism type II and hereditary sensory neuropathy type II.
WNK1 plays a key role in electrolyte homeostasis, cell signaling, survival, and proliferation. It acts as both an activator and inhibitor of sodium- and potassium-coupled chloride cotransporters, respectively. WNK1 activates SCNN1A, SCNN1B, SCNN1D, and SGK1, and localizes to the distal nephron, a kidney segment involved in salt, potassium, and pH balance. Mutations in WNK genes are associated with pseudohypoaldosteronism and neuropathy.
