Target Information
Specialized cells at the midline, which separates the left and right halves of the central nervous system (CNS), play key roles in directing growth cone behavior. In vertebrates, insects, and C. elegans, midline cells produce guidance cues such as nectins and slit, acting as attractants and repellents. Robo proteins serve as receptors for Slit, functioning as gatekeepers to regulate axon crossing at the midline.
Robo1 and Robo2 are human homologs of the Drosophila roundabout protein, with Robo1 also homologous to the C. elegans gene sax3 and Robo2 to the zebrafish gene astray.
