Target Information
This gene produces multiple transcript variants with distinct first exons. At least three alternatively spliced variants encode proteins functioning as CDK4 kinase inhibitors. Another variant encodes an ARF protein that stabilizes tumor suppressor p53 by sequestering MDM2, preventing p53 degradation. Despite structural and functional differences, both CDK inhibitor isoforms and ARF share roles in G1 cell cycle control. The gene is frequently mutated or deleted in various tumors and acts as a key tumor suppressor.
