Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and participate in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where the ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes do not contain a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ greatly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPL11 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, with three transcript variants encoding different isoforms. Pseudogenes are found on chromosomes 5q and 12q.
