Target Information
Adipose tissue serves as an energy reserve in animals and is tightly regulated. Adipocytes produce and secrete several physiologically important proteins, including lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, Acrp30, resistin, and perilipin.
Perilipin is an intracellular neutral lipid droplet protein localized exclusively to the surface of lipid droplets and hormonally regulated. Upon lipolytic stimulation, perilipin is phosphorylated by protein kinase A and inhibits hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL), which mediates hydrolysis of triacylglycerol.
Perilipin expression is restricted to adipocytes and steroidogenic cells. Two isoforms, Perilipin A and B, are known and result from differential splicing of a single-copy gene.
