Target Information
Milk lipid globules from humans, cows, and rats contain a protein identified as adipocyte differentiation-related protein (ADFP), associated with the globule surface membrane. Previously believed to be adipocyte-specific, ADFP (Adipophilin) is a major component of the globule surface and part of a detergent-insoluble complex containing butyrophilin and xanthine oxidase.
ADFP is found in many cultured cell lines (fibroblasts, endothelial, epithelial cells), while in tissues it is expressed in specific cell types such as:
- Lactating mammary epithelial cells
- Adrenal cortex cells
- Sertoli and Leydig cells in the male reproductive system
- Fatty change hepatocytes in alcoholic liver cirrhosis
ADFP may serve as a marker for identifying specialized differentiated cells containing lipid droplets and for diseases involving fat-accumulating cells.
