Target Information
The SMC3 gene belongs to the SMC3 subfamily of structural maintenance of chromosomes (SMC) proteins. The encoded protein exists as either an intracellular nuclear protein or a secreted form. The nuclear form, known as structural maintenance of chromosomes 3, is a component of the cohesin complex that holds sister chromatids together during mitosis, ensuring proper chromosome segregation. Post-translational modification with chondroitin sulfate chains produces the secreted proteoglycan bamacan, an abundant basement membrane protein.
