Target Information
SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), also known as 2019-nCoV, is a virus causing illnesses ranging from mild cold symptoms to severe respiratory distress and death.
The Spike (S) protein plays a critical role in viral attachment, fusion, and entry, serving as a key target for antibody development, entry inhibitors, and vaccines.
The receptor-binding domain (RBD, S-RBD) of the Spike protein binds strongly to human and bat angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors. SARS-CoV-2 RBD exhibits higher binding affinity to ACE2 compared to SARS-CoV RBD.
S1 contains the RBD that specifically binds to ACE2 receptors on target cells.
