Target Information

LFG (Lifeguard), a seven transmembrane spanning protein, is a member of a family that inhibits apoptotic cell death induced by the Fas receptor. LFG is the human homolog of rat NMP35 and contains a conserved transmembrane domain and a small cytoplasmic domain. Studies have shown that LFG protects cells from Fas-mediated neuronal cell death in a unique manner. It binds to the Fas receptor but does not reduce Fas expression or interfere with FADD binding. LFG does not protect against TNF-alpha mediated cell death. Although ubiquitously expressed, Northern blot analysis shows increased expression in the hippocampus and other neural tissues, indicating a potential protective role in neurodegenerative diseases.
