Target Information
ACR (Acrosin) is the major proteinase present in the acrosome of mature spermatozoa. It is a serine proteinase with trypsin-like specificity and stored in the acrosome as proacrosin. The active enzyme aids in the lysis of the zona pellucida, enabling sperm penetration through the ovum’s glycoprotein layers. Proacrosin mRNA is synthesized only in the postmeiotic stages of spermatogenesis, first appearing in haploid spermatids in humans.
