Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family, which is part of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily. This family includes growth and differentiation factors that regulate bone and cartilage development. BMP4 plays a critical role in endochondral bone formation, and reduced expression is associated with bone disorders such as Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Alternative splicing in the 5′ untranslated region results in three transcript variants encoding the same protein.
