Sall4 단백질은 인간 염색체 20에 위치한 Sall4 유전자에 의해 암호화되며, Spalt-like 단백질 계열에 속합니다.
이 단백질은 체세포 줄기세포 유지에 중요한 역할을 하며, 줄기세포 바이오마커로 연구되고 있습니다.
Sall4는 아연 핑거 전사인자(zinc finger transcription factor)로서 발달 과정에서 상향 조절되며, Oct4, Sox2와 상호작용하고 Nanog 복합체를 형성하여 배아줄기세포(ESCs)의 다능성을 유지합니다.
