Target Information
Actin is a ubiquitous protein involved in filament formation that constitutes a large portion of the cytoskeleton. Actin filaments interact with myosin to assist in muscle contraction, cell motility, and cytokinesis.
In vertebrates, there are three groups of actin isoforms: alpha, beta, and gamma.
- Alpha actins: found in muscle tissues, major constituents of the contractile apparatus
- Beta and gamma actins: co-exist in most cell types as components of the cytoskeleton and mediators of internal cell motility
