Target Information

Glycoprotein VI (GP6) is a 58-kDa platelet membrane glycoprotein crucial for collagen-induced platelet activation and aggregation. Upon vascular injury, exposure of the subendothelial matrix to blood flow leads to platelet deposition. Collagen fibers (types I, III, and VI) are the main thrombogenic components. Platelet interaction with collagen occurs in two steps:

  1. Initial adhesion to collagen
  2. Activation leading to secretion, recruitment, and aggregation

This process forms a platelet plug that limits blood loss. However, collagen exposure after atherosclerotic plaque rupture can trigger thrombus formation associated with myocardial infarction or stroke.
