Target Information
The gamma globin genes (HBG1 and HBG2) are expressed in the fetal liver, spleen, and bone marrow. Two gamma chains with two alpha chains form fetal hemoglobin (HbF), which is replaced by adult hemoglobin (HbA) at birth. In some beta-thalassemias, gamma chain production continues into adulthood. HBG2 (G-gamma) contains glycine at residue 136, while HBG1 (A-gamma) contains alanine. The gene order in the beta-globin cluster is 5′-epsilon - gamma-G - gamma-A - delta - beta-3′.
