Target Information
PGA5 (Pepsinogen 5, group I / Pepsinogen A):
Pepsinogens are inactive precursors of pepsin, the major acid protease found in the stomach. Pepsin is secreted by the gastric mucosa as a single polypeptide chain and is activated by removal of a 41-amino-acid segment from the N-terminus. Hydrochloric acid is required to convert pepsinogen to pepsin and to maintain the optimal pH (1–3) for enzyme activity. Pepsin preferentially cleaves peptide bonds involving aromatic amino acids such as phenylalanine and leucine but exhibits broad specificity overall. PGA5 belongs to the pepsin family subfamily A1 and is the predominant endopeptidase in vertebrate gastric juice. It is inhibited by ovUS-1, a uterine serpin.
