Target Information
IL-10 encodes a cytokine primarily produced by monocytes, with additional production by lymphocytes. It plays a key role in immunoregulation and inflammation by down-regulating Th1 cytokines, MHC class II antigens, and costimulatory molecules on macrophages. IL-10 enhances B cell survival, proliferation, and antibody production, and can inhibit NF-κB activity. It is involved in the regulation of the JAK-STAT signaling pathway. Knockout studies in mice indicate IL-10 as an essential immunoregulator in the intestinal tract. Mutations in IL10 are associated with increased susceptibility to HIV-1 infection and rheumatoid arthritis. Diseases linked to IL10 include Graft-Versus-Host Disease and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1.
