Product Specific Information

PA1-26901 detects Apolipoprotein B from human samples.

Target Information

Apolipoprotein B (apo B) is a major protein of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) in human plasma, with a molecular mass of approximately 260–500 kDa. It binds to specific receptors on cell membranes and plays a critical role in the removal of LDL and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol from circulation.

LDL serves as the carrier protein for cholesterol in the blood, mediating uptake and clearance via LDL receptors. In atherosclerotic lesions, oxidized LDL is recognized and ingested by macrophages through scavenger receptors such as A and CD36. Elevated Apolipoprotein B levels are associated with premature atherosclerosis.

Apolipoprotein B occurs mainly as two isoforms, apoB-48 and apoB-100, encoded by a single gene. ApoB-48 is produced by RNA editing of apoB-100 mRNA, introducing a stop codon at residue 2180. Mutations in the Apolipoprotein B gene can lead to hypobetalipoproteinemia, normotriglyceridemic hypobetalipoproteinemia, and hypercholesterolemia due to ligand-defective forms.

Normal plasma Apolipoprotein B levels are approximately 800 mg/L.
