Target Information
BAX is a member of the Bcl-2 family and plays an important role in the regulation of apoptosis. While Bcl-2 is an anti-apoptotic protein, BAX has a pro-apoptotic function. Regulation of apoptosis involves both homo- and heterodimerization of different isoforms of BAX and Bcl-2.
The Bax gene encodes isoforms including Bax alpha (21 kDa) and Bax beta (24 kDa). Both contain BH1, BH2, and BH3 domains, but Bax beta has a unique C-terminus lacking a hydrophobic transmembrane domain. Bcl-2 also has multiple isoforms, with Bcl-2 beta differing from Bcl-2 alpha in the 3′ UTR and coding region.
Overexpression of BAX promotes cell death through dimerization with other BCL-2 family proteins.
