Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins composing the mitoribosome vary greatly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, with three transcript variants encoding different isoforms. Pseudogenes are found on chromosomes 5q and 12q.
