Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA found in prokaryotic ribosomes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary greatly among species, both in sequence and biochemical properties, complicating recognition by sequence homology. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified. Pseudogenes corresponding to this gene are found on chromosomes 5q and 12q.
