p19는 INK4 계열의 cyclin-dependent kinase 억제 단백질로, CDK4 또는 CDK6과 안정적인 복합체를 형성하여 CDK kinase의 활성을 억제함으로써 세포 성장 조절 및 G1 단계 진행을 조절합니다. 이 단백질의 전사체는 세포주기 의존적으로 발현량이 변하며, G1 중기에서 가장 낮고 S기에서 최대 발현을 보입니다. 또한 신경세포 증식 및 정자형성 억제에 관여합니다.
