Target Information

MAP2 (Microtubule Associated Protein 2) exists in two high molecular weight forms (MAP2a & MAP2b) and a low molecular weight form. Its expression is developmentally regulated, with multiple forms arising by alternative splicing of a single gene. MAP2 is involved in microtubule assembly, essential for neurogenesis.
In rat and mouse, MAP2 proteins are neuron-specific cytoskeletal proteins enriched in dendrites, playing a role in determining and stabilizing dendritic shape during neuron development.
MAP2 is useful for studying neuron structure in normal and malignant brain tissue, as well as in degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease (AD).
