Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene is a cytokine belonging to the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) ligand family. It is abundantly expressed in endothelial cells, but not in B or T cells. Expression is inducible by TNF and IL-1α.
This cytokine acts as a ligand for TNFRSF25 and decoy receptor TNFRSF21/DR6, activating NF-κB and MAP kinases. It functions as an autocrine factor inducing apoptosis in endothelial cells and inhibits endothelial cell proliferation, potentially serving as an angiogenesis inhibitor.
An additional isoform from an alternatively spliced transcript variant has been reported, though its sequence has not been determined.
