Target Information
Paraneoplastic opsoclonus myoclonus ataxia (POMA) is a neurologic disorder mediated by autoimmune attack against onconeural antigens expressed by gynecologic or lung tumors and neurons. Nova-1 and Nova-2 are both POMA disease antigens.
Autoimmune attack against Nova-2 in POMA patients results in latent cancer, reduced inhibitory control of movements, and dementia. Nova-2 is closely related to Nova-1 and is highly expressed in neurons during development and at lower levels in adult lung.
In postnatal mouse brain, Nova-2 is expressed reciprocally with Nova-1, showing high levels in the neocortex and hippocampus. Both Nova proteins are RNA-binding proteins that regulate neuronal pre-mRNA splicing by directly binding RNA. Nova-2 target genes function in synapse or axon guidance, indicating its major role in synaptic function regulation.
