Target Information
Voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) proteins are abundant pore-forming proteins located in the mitochondrial outer membrane and also expressed in the plasma membrane.
At least three different VDAC genes have been identified in vertebrates.
VDAC proteins play essential roles in cellular metabolism and apoptosis initiation.
VDAC forms a major pathway for metabolite exchange between cytosol and mitochondria (e.g., ADP/ATP, succinate, citrate).
VDAC1 in the plasma membrane may regulate apoptosis via redox activity.
