Target Information
Erythropoietin (EPO) is a growth factor essential for the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of erythroid precursors. It induces the final maturation of partially differentiated erythroid cells and promotes hemoglobin production. The EPO receptor (EPOR) is highly expressed on precursor cells and decreases as cells mature.
Hepatocytes are the main source of EPO during fetal development, while interstitial kidney cells become the primary source after birth. EPO expression increases under hypoxic conditions and has also been detected in lung and brain tissue. Recent studies suggest EPO may protect neuronal tissue and initiate repair mechanisms.
