Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where the ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack the 5S rRNA found in prokaryotic ribosomes.
The MRPS18A gene encodes a 28S subunit protein belonging to the ribosomal protein S18P family. It is one of three human mitochondrial S18 proteins with significant similarity to bacterial S18 proteins. A pseudogene corresponding to MRPS18A exists on chromosome 3p, and alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants.
