Target Information
BAF53A is a member of the actin-related protein (ARP) family, sharing significant sequence identity with conventional actins. Both actins and ARPs possess an ATP-binding cleft known as the actin fold. ARPs participate in cellular processes such as vesicular transport, spindle orientation, nuclear migration, and chromatin remodeling.
This gene encodes a 53 kDa subunit of the BAF (BRG1/brm-associated factor) complex in mammals, functionally related to the SWI/SNF complex in yeast and Drosophila. The complex facilitates transcriptional activation by counteracting chromatin-mediated repression. Together with beta-actin, BAF53A is essential for maximal ATPase activity of BRG1 and association of the BAF complex with chromatin/matrix.
Three transcript variants encoding two different isoforms have been described.
