Target Information
This gene is a member of the equilibrative nucleoside transporter family. It encodes a transmembrane glycoprotein localized to plasma and mitochondrial membranes, mediating cellular uptake of nucleosides from the surrounding medium. The protein acts as an equilibrative transporter sensitive to inhibition by nitrobenzylthioinosine.
Nucleoside transporters are essential for nucleotide synthesis in cells lacking de novo nucleoside synthesis pathways and facilitate uptake of cytotoxic nucleosides used in cancer and viral chemotherapies. Multiple alternatively spliced variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
