Target Information
The Bone Sialoprotein gene encodes a major structural protein of the bone matrix, constituting approximately 12% of noncollagenous proteins in human bone. It is synthesized by skeletal-associated cells such as hypertrophic chondrocytes, osteoblasts, osteocytes, and osteoclasts, with the trophoblast being the only extraskeletal site of synthesis. This protein binds calcium and hydroxyapatite through acidic amino acid clusters and mediates cell attachment via an RGD sequence that interacts with the vitronectin receptor.
