Target Information
CD16 encodes a receptor that recognizes the Fc portion of immunoglobulin G and is involved in the clearance of immune complexes from circulation, as well as functions such as cell-mediated cytotoxicity and enhancement of virus infections.
The gene FCGR3A shares high similarity with FCGR3B, located nearby on chromosome 1.
- Expression: FCGR3A is expressed on NK cells as an integral membrane glycoprotein, while FCGR3B is expressed on polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN).
- Clinical relevance: Mutations in FCGR3A are associated with Immunodeficiency 20, susceptibility to recurrent viral infections, systemic lupus erythematosus, and alloimmune neonatal neutropenia.
- Variants: Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
