Target Information
Glutamate-cysteine ligase (GCLC), also known as gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase, is the first rate-limiting enzyme in glutathione synthesis. It consists of a heavy catalytic subunit and a light regulatory subunit.
This gene encodes the catalytic subunit, while the regulatory subunit is encoded by a separate gene on chromosome 1p22-p21. Mutations in this gene are associated with hemolytic anemia due to enzyme deficiency and increased susceptibility to myocardial infarction.
