Methionine synthase 효소가 이를 촉매하며, 이 효소는 cob(I)alamin 보조인자의 산화로 인해 비활성화됩니다. 본 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 환원적 메틸화를 통해 기능성 methionine synthase를 재생성합니다. 이 단백질은 ferredoxin-NADP(+) reductase (FNR) 계열의 전자 전달 효소에 속합니다. Folate/cobalamin 대사 이상 질환인 cbl-E 보완군 환자는 methionine synthase의 환원 활성화에 결함을 보입니다. 대체 스플라이싱을 통해 여러 전사 변이체가 생성되어 서로 다른 아이소폼을 암호화합니다.
