Target Information
Glutathione peroxidase catalyzes the reduction of hydrogen peroxide, organic hydroperoxide, and lipid peroxides by reduced glutathione, protecting cells against oxidative damage. Human plasma glutathione peroxidase is a selenium-containing enzyme where the UGA codon is translated into selenocysteine. Alternative splicing and transcription initiation in rat result in proteins localized to the nucleus, mitochondrion, and cytoplasm. In humans, experimental evidence supports alternative splicing; however, the mitochondrial and nuclear transit peptide cleavage sites require further verification.
