Target Information
Interleukin 8 (IL-8, CXCL8) is a 72 amino acid pro-inflammatory factor belonging to the CXC chemokine subfamily.
It binds to cell surface receptors IL-8RA and IL-8RB and functions as a chemoattractant and angiogenic factor.
IL-8 expression can be induced by inflammatory stimuli in macrophages and endothelial cells, where it is stored in Weibel-Palade bodies.
IL-8 was first isolated from osteosarcoma cells and contains the ELR-motif (Glu-Leu-Arg sequence), signaling through CXCR1 and CXCR2 receptors.
Previous names include NAP-1, GCP-1, MONAP, and protein 3-10C.
IL-8 and related chemokines form a gene cluster on chromosome 4q and are implicated in tumor angiogenesis and bronchiolitis pathogenesis.
