Saraf encodes a protein that acts as a negative regulator of store-operated Ca²⁺ entry (SOCE), protecting cells from Ca²⁺ overfilling. Upon cytosolic Ca²⁺ elevation after endoplasmic reticulum refilling, it promotes slow inactivation of STIM (STIM1 or STIM2)-dependent SOCE activity. It may facilitate the de-oligomerization of STIM to effectively turn off ORAI channels when ER Ca²⁺ levels are restored, preventing excessive intracellular Ca²⁺ accumulation.
