Protein kinases are enzymes that transfer a phosphate group from a phosphate donor, generally the γ phosphate of ATP, onto an acceptor amino acid in a substrate protein. Through this mechanism, protein kinases mediate signal transduction in eukaryotic cells, regulating metabolism, transcription, cell cycle progression, cytoskeletal rearrangement, cell movement, apoptosis, and differentiation.
The protein kinase family, comprising over 500 gene products, is one of the largest in eukaryotes and is classified into 8 major groups based on catalytic domain sequences. The AGC kinase group includes 63 kinases such as PKA, PKG, PKC, RAC/Akt, ARK, and RSK families.
