Target Information
Mammalian serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT) is a tetrameric, pyridoxal phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzyme that catalyzes the reversible interconversion of serine and tetrahydrofolate to glycine and methylenetetrahydrofolate. SHMT1 (cytoplasmic) and SHMT2 (mitochondrial) perform distinct roles in one-carbon metabolism. cSHMT supports thymidylate biosynthesis, while mSHMT contributes to mitochondrial folate metabolism.
