Target Information

SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), also known as 2019-nCoV, causes illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory distress and death.
The CoV Spike (S) protein is critical for viral attachment, fusion, and entry, serving as a major target for antibody and vaccine development.
The Spike protein receptor-binding domain (RBD, S-RBD) binds strongly to human and bat ACE2 receptors, exhibiting higher affinity than SARS-CoV RBD.
S1 contains the RBD that specifically binds to ACE2 receptors on target cells.
SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein is 1273 amino acids long, consisting of:

  • Signal peptide (aa 1–13)
  • S1 subunit (aa 14–685)
  • S2 subunit (aa 686–1273)

These regions are responsible for receptor binding and membrane fusion. The S-ECD represents the extracellular domain of the Spike protein.
